Can you have a successful career blogging?
The New York Times recently ran this article: Can Blogs Become a Big Source of Jobs?
The article points out, that as blogs are becoming more and more popular, there is more demand for employees who can write or support them, from CEO’s on down.
“There’s almost an ecosystem of jobs that have emerged around blogs,” said Paul Forster, chief executive at Indeed.com, a job search engine with postings from more than 5,000 sources. “It’s an emerging area where there are many more opportunities related to the blog rather than being a dedicated blog writer.”
Here’s another interesting tidbit.
“According to information provided by Indeed, the average salary for jobs with some version of “blog” in the job title averages $53,000. But for writers trying to eke out an existence as a blogger for a business, pay is typically much more modest.”
If you are not in the market to go out and get a job working for a big company in a position that is related to the blogging field, you can still earn money via blogging. If you are just focusing on your own blogs, you can earn money from advertising, affiliates and companies that pay you to blog about their product such as ReviewMe and Payperpost. You could join a blogging network and blog for another company such as b5media.
“At b5media, a global blog network out of Toronto with about 200 blogs on subjects ranging from sports and entertainment to news and technology, writers work on a contract basis. They are paid a fee of only $100 to $250 a month, based on their experience and the quality of their work. The real money can come from bonuses that are tied to the traffic their blogs receive.”
So it does seem entirely possible that you could base a career around blogging. There are many more options today as blogging is becoming more mainstream. You can blog for yourself, perhaps having several blogs or more, blog for a network such as b5media, or you can go and get yourself hired by a larger company, and work either writing a corporate blog or help to maintain one. It doesn’t seem as if blogging is going to be a quick get rich scheme, but this proves that you can earn money, or even earn a living, working for the blogosphere.
